Tenby - History

Tenby, Welsh Dinbych-y-pysgod market town and resort is located in the historic and present county of Pembrokeshire, Wales, on Carmarthen Bay. Though Scandinavian settlement probably occurred there, Tenby town essentially dates from the building of a Norman castle and walled borough in the 12th century; parts of the walls survive, but the castle is in ruins. Fishing has long been an important activity, and the fine beaches, cliffs, and attractive narrow streets have brought a flourishing holiday trade.

Two world wars, especially the second, disrupted tourism during the twentieth century, but overall Tenby has enjoyed much success. The harbour, probably the most photographed and recognisable view in Wales, used to be the location of a thriving fishing industry but now shelters an armada of small and colourful sailing and leisure boats. Much of the 13th century town wall is still intact and the narrow streets are fringed with all types of shops and restaurants.
