There
were a number of famous animals in the original collection, including
'Cheetah' the chimpanzee from the film 'Tarzan the Magnificent' and an
alligator named Daisy from the film of the same name. Animals of a
different kind (and different time) are at Dinosaur World. It is the
largest and most realistic collection of life size dinosaurs in Britain.
It’s fun and educational too. Eirias Park offers everything from
gardens and parkland to wonderful sporting facilities. It has a
superb indoor leisure centre complete with squash courts, a multi-purpose
sports hall, and a magnificent
swimming pool.
Conwy
Castle is one of the most picturesque of Welsh castles and a masterpiece
of medieval architecture. King Edward I after the English armies had
completed the conquest of Snowdonia and terminated the rule of the Welsh
princes built the castle between 1283 and 1287. If you visit Conwyn Bay you can’t miss the Andrew Fraser Memorial Clock.
A
must see for everybody is the
Bodnant Garden, which is one of the finest, as well as one of the
largest (at 32ha) in the country. It is situated above the River Conwy on
ground sloping to the southwest and looks across the valley towards the
Snowdonia range. Henry Pochin, whose daughter married the 1st
Lord Aberconway, began to build it in 1875. Both the first Lady Aberconway,
and her son greatly expanded the pleasure grounds, which have wonderful
views of Snowdonia. The 3rd Lord Aberconway expanded the garden The gardens are in two parts, and deserve a morning in one part, an afternoon in the other. Around the house, which is not open, there are formal terraces, yew hedges, lily ponds, herbaceous borders, and the famous laburnum arch, a golden blaze in early summer. The less formal part of the garden is known as The Dell, and takes advantage of soil, topography and climate to show off a wonderful collection of plants from all over the world, particularly magnolia, camellia, and rhododendron. There are also fine trees of every kind and many cultivars raised at Bodnant as well the National Collections of Embothrium, Eucryphia, Magnolia, Rhododendron; all in all Bodnant probably has more different species of plants from all over the world than any other garden in the country. It has probably also more gardeners than any other garden; there are still 18, but there were nearly 100 in the 1930's. |
