Aberystwyth - Culture

home

Aberystwyth is a pleasant seaside town of some 12000 people and serves a local population of about 25000. It is the main market centre for mid and west Wales. Its dual functions of an academic community and tourist resort ensure that the town enjoys a thriving commercial and social life throughout the year unlike many of the similar seaside towns in the UK.

It's not unusual to see a young and trendy person in a bar dressed in the latest "fad" or fashion and next to them will be a farm worker grabbing a quick pint whilst on the way home! The mix of personalities is why Aberystwyth is the great place it is and though the facilities might not be as good as the larger towns and cities the very low rate of crime and friendliness of all you meet is the best thing of all!

Though established by English conquerors in the Welsh heartland, Aberystwyth has become a principal stronghold of Welsh culture. The founder college of the University of Wales was established there in 1872 and is one of the finest in Wales offering a wide range of courses in many disciplines. Modern university buildings and the National Library of Wales, one of Britain's copyright libraries, overlook the town from Penglais Hill to the northeast. Dedicated to the history of Ceredigion and Cardiganshire, the Ceredigion Museum should not be missed. A variety of well-presented displays chronicle local life through the ages with many fascinating objects. Particular emphasis is given to agriculture, seafaring and lead mining, but there is much more on offer besides. The diverse collection of items on display has many items donated by local people and includes items from farm equipment to children's toys to an unnerving collection of dentistry equipment.
