Arts and Culture in Malmö have earned a reputation for their variation and high standard. In Malmö you can enjoy everything from magnificent musicals and classical concerts to experimental theatre, big band jazz and poetry festivals. The City of Malmö boasts a rich palette of cultural experiences for both adults and children. Many exciting cultural encounters result from the city's multicultural appeal.

Malmö Music Theatre
Malmö Music Theatre has become one of the most exciting theatres of its kind in Sweden. Their repertoire includes music theatre, opera and musicals, both classic and contemporary, Swedish and international. The theatre boasts many successes like the premiere of the most famous Swedish musical ever – "Kristina from Duvemåla" by former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.

A contemporary dance company
Skånes Dansteater is a dance institution formed in 1995 from the Malmö Ballet. It is now a regional contemporary dance company based in Malmö's main stage, Storan. The company produces contemporary dance choreographed by its artistic director Lena Josefsson, as well as by guest choreographers.
 
Malmö Theatre of Drama
Malmö Theatre of Drama was created in 1993 by the subdivision of Malmö City Theatre. The main stage is situated in the old restored building of the Hippodrome. There are also the smaller stages of Intiman and ´Odromen. The theatre has established an innovative profile with the aim of expanding the horizons of dramatic art as well as those of the audience.
 
Malmö Symphony Orchestra
The Malmö Symphony Orchestra is of international class. It attracts guest performers from all over the world and exports its own music in the form of concerts and CD records, many of which reach international recognition through various nominations and awards. The orchestra´s homebase is the Malmö Concert Hall, opened in 1985.

Malmö Art Gallery
Malmö Art Gallery, inaugurated in 1975, is one of Europe´s largest centres for contemporary art with a floorspace of more than 2000 m². The art gallery arranges about ten exhibitions a year, ranging from the classics of modern art to present day experiments.

Rooseum
The Rooseum is an international centre for contemporary art, founded in 1988 by Swedish art collector and financier Fredrik Roos. Since Roos´death the museum has been managed by the City of Malmö, Lil and Axel Roos and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. The Rooseum building, erected in 1900 to house steam turbines, was turned into a magnificant art museum in the 80s.

Form/Design Center
Meet some of the best and newest Swedish and Scandinavian design in the unique Form/design Center. More than 20 exhibitions of architecture, design and arts & crafts are presented every year. Form/Design Center is run by Svensk Form, a non-profit organisation, whose purpose is to promote good design.

Malmö Museums
The Malmö Museums are probably unique in Europe because of the diversity of their collections. They consist in reality of four museums: the Art Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the City Museum and the Science & Technology/Maritime Museum. The museums are situated in and around Malmöhus Castle, Scandinavia´s oldest remaining Renaissance castle.

The City Library
The new City Library was opened in May 1997. The world famous Danish architect Henning Larsen has designed an impressive building which rises majestically next to the old library building. The new building is known as the Calendar of Light. Thanks to its 17m-high glass façade facing the Park, the light streaming into the lofty main hall of the library will change with the seasons, the foliage and the weather.
 
The Cultural Scene of Malmö also includes a large number of theatrical companies. They are located all over Malmö and often play to full houses. Malmö also has numerous music societies, several of which organise jazz concerts with international stars and local artists.
