Karlskrona - Culture |
|
Today,
Karlskrona is a modern city, a leader in the field of IT development,
and more than 10 % of those employed work for IT companies. Karlskrona
also has a strong profile as the meeting point of the Baltic, with a
newly built ferry port for future traffic with other Baltic countries.
By sailing daily between Karlskrona and Gdynia, Poland, the Stena Europe
provides a quick and easy shortcut to Europe. Our new neighbours around
the Baltic represent a market with 50 million people. The population of
Gdynia/Gdansk/Sopot alone is about a million. About 61.000 people live
in Karlskrona.
The Great Square A (Stortorget) One of the largest squares in Europe. The buzz of everyday life and a daily market is framed by majestic buildings, including the baroque churches Trinity Church (pictured) and Frederik's Church, both designed by Nicodemus Tessin junior. Trinity Church is often called the German Church
Stumholmen island (Stumholmen) The district of Stumholmen lies only a few hundred metres east of the Great Square. Here you can see how architects of the 90s have married the old with the new. Stumholmen as formerly a strictly military zone and the general public were not admitted. Now the island is open to everyone and has super-modern flats, a museum and more. The beach on Stumholm is one of the most popular in Karlskrona.
Klaipeda Place (Klaipedaplatsen) Named after the third biggest city in Lithuania, which, since 1989, has been twinned with Karlskrona. Directly under Klaipeda Place there is a tunnel – the Military Tunnel – which has now been transformed into a tourist attraction, especially for children.
