Vladivostok - History |
|
But the city was being
constructed during those times when architects were not tied by standards,
norms, ISO, special instructions, and rulings of the Central Committee.
And that's why old cities are so different. If you ask an old inhabitant
where the city begins and what he means by the word Vladivostok, his
answer is sure to be of the old city. And that's it! Somebody dictates the
rest. And you know, this city has been through so much, this old city, and
it's still living, and I believe it's got a great future to follow! But the history is still a
history. So lets travel back a century and a half ago and see how this
great sea city was created, we'll walk though all those places where the
first inhabitants used to walk and we'll see their livings. And then we
can appreciate the efforts and love dedicated to this city! Let's go
ahead, my loyal friend, the history is waiting for us… It all started with the
ratification of the "Aigunski Dogovor" (Agreement) between
Russia and Daitsinski State (China) of the "16th day of 1858",
initiated by Nickolai Nickolayevich Muraviyov-Amurski. As the outcome of
the Agreement Russia had obtained the primorsky (seashore) territory at
the east of the country. And the first task was to find a non-freezing way
into the Pacific and to equip it, in other words to build a port. And a
port is generally known to be constructed by people who are familiar with
the sea not only by hearsay. Those were the military sailors. The rumours
about Amur (the name of our land) were pretty unhopeful, they used to say
it was wild and tough there but it did not scare but attracted the
adventure seekers! Soon was developed the first
settling in the bay "Zolotoi Rog" (The Golden Horn Bay). In 1860
the ship Manchzhur was equipped and the captain was Komarov N.V. In 1861
the first settlers were launched in the Vladivostok harbour.
In the same year of 1861 a new
official commander - the Chief Officer of the clipper "Pirate"
lieutenant Burachek E.S. who went back to St. Petersburg in 1865 responded
about the port in not very flattery manner, "Drunkenness was popular
among the soldiers… " Burachek had celebrated the 50th anniversary
of his city and after his death his remains was relocated to Vladivostok.
And what's with our city?, you are asking. And our port kept growing and
developing, new buildings and roads were put up, trade and fishing
industry were developing. And soon all the mountains around the port
turned to be built over, people started to explore the nearest islands. Of
course, the first thirty years changed little in the settlement, it has
expanded but the most of the buildings were still out of wood. But for all
that, in 1875 on November 30 the acting military governor of the Primorsky
territory major general Simonov finally approved for the City authorities
(Duma) to be elected. And the first city head became retired second
lieutenant Fedorov. Thus, Vladivostok became a city. And I should say that
city-dwellers had not made a wrong vote: Fedorov governed the city fair
and astutely and consequently was awarded four Russian, Japanese, and
Chinese orders and many medals. And what's with the city? The
city was living it's life and soon rear-admiral Feldgauzen was allowed by
the head of the Maritime Ministry admiral Shestakov to issue the city
newspaper and on December 17th 1883 the first issue was printed. In three
years the City authorities will award the status of a an honoured citizen
of the city to two journalists Shestakov and Feldgauzen.. In the same year
1883 peasants were travelling by sea from Odessa to Vladivostok. That was
not the end of the city cultural growth. In 1890 the Primorsky Region
Study Organization leaded by Sologub N.V established a museum. On January 1, 1899 a
Vladivostok-Kamchatskaya eparchy was established and bishop Yevseviy
arrived in Vladivostok and in 1911 a temple-chapel of Alexander Nevski was
built. The time was passing by,
meeting the newcomers and seeing off the broken ones. Twenty years had
come by and the region was still sparsely populated since the road to
Siberia was too long and too difficult. But at the same time peasants have
been re-settling over the South-Ussuriysky Krai up until the revolution. So we've come to the very
important line in the history of not only Vladivostok but the world - the
XX century. It brought a lot of good and also a lot of bad: the
revolution, wars, buildings were breaking down in the city but at the same
time a lot had been done for the development of our beautiful city Soon was developed the first
settling in the bay "Zolotoi Rog" (The Golden Horn Bay). In 1860
the ship Manchzhur was equipped and the captain was Komarov N.V. In 1861
the first settlers were launched in the Vladivostok harbour. |
