Chelyabinsk - Culture

  

The Chelyabinsk Academic Opera House was opened in 1956. Over 40 years it put on the stage dozens of operas and ballets by Russian and foreign composers.

The Chelyabinsk Academic Drama theatre is famous not only in this area but also far beyond it. The theatre began staging plays in 1921. By early 50s the Drama theatre had a bright and talented company of actors and actresses. The theatre became country-famed. These days the repertoire of the theatre includes more than 20 plays.

The Chelyabinsk Puppet theatre was founded in 1935. Since 1978 the Puppet theatre has been a member of the International Association for Puppet theatres’ workers.

The repertoire of the Children’s theatre abounds with fairy-tales, adventures, fantastic, romantic and dramatic stories. Over the years of its existence the theatre won prizes at prestigious theatrical festivals.

The Chamber theatre is the youngest state-owned theatre in Chelyabinsk. The first plays put on its stage attracted spectators’ and critics’ attention. The repertoire of the theatre includes some 20 performances.

The Chelyabinsk Museum of Regional Studies has warmly received its visitors for more than 70 years. The museum contains a number of interesting collections: mineralogical, botanical, archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic and others. You cannot but mention the collection of rare books, paintings, chinaware, arts and crafts. The museum has total of 250 exhibits.

The collection of the Arts and Crafts museum features arts development in the industrial Urals area from the beginning of the XIXth century till now. The museum exhibits the most complete and interesting collection of Kasly ornamental cast iron works

The Chelyabinsk Picture Gallery has a big collection of paintings, icons, manuscripts and books.

The Chelyabinsk regional scientific universal library is one of the largest libraries in Russia. The library numbers some two million other editions.

It stands 210-240 m. above sea level. The climate is temperate continental. The winter lasts from November till March. The summer is short, but sometimes hot and rainy. Since 1893 the lowest temperature have been observed on the first of January 1979 (48,3oC) and the highest - in 1952 (39oC)

There are several lakes near the city. They are: The First Lake - 19 km2, Smolino - 22 km2, Sineglazovo - 22 km2 and Shershny reservoir.

At present Chelyabinsk is a modern city with more than a million inhabitants, and some one hundred nationalities. Its 50 thousand hectares comprise 7 districts, 50 communities, and 1300 streets.
