Zakopane - Culture

Zakopane is the biggest Polish centre of mountain hiking and skiing. Its population is about 28.000 citizens. The town is visited by about 2.000.000 tourists a year. Zakopane is situated in Nowy Sacz voivodship, in southern part of Podhale region, at the feet of Tatra Mts.  – the only alpine mountain range in this part of Europe. It lies in big glen between the Tatra Mts. and Gubalowka hill. Zakopane is 110km from Krakow along highway N°95, also known as Zakopianka which turns into a country road after only 30km from Krakow.

The most interesting are Muzeum Tatrzańskie (with a few branches in the city and in Podhale) and Muzeum Przyrodnicze TPN. Many biographic museums are worth seeing too, e.g. a museum of a composer, Karol Szymanowski, and a poet, Jan Kasprowicz. There are also many exhibition halls and galleries, as well as artist schools. There is also a professional theatre - Teatr im. Stanislawa Ignacego Witkiewicza. You can acquaint with culture of mountain people in "Tatrzanski Osrodek Swojszczyzny" and participating in many celebrations during which amateur folk groups from Zakopane and the environs present their repertoire.

Tatra Museum in Zakopane The Dr Tytus Chaubipski Tatra Museum was set up in 1888 by a group of friends of Dr Tytus Chaubipski (1820-1889) to celebrate him as the discoverer of the values of Zakopane as a health resort, an outstanding Warsaw physician, scientist and social activist, a great admirer of the Tatra Mts and the folklore of the local people. Towards this end the museum founders set up the Dr T. Chaubipski Society of the Tatra Museum with a view to raising the necessary means and working out methods of the organization and development of the museum. The first exhibition was held in a now non-existent building in Krupowki Street, rented by the Society.

The Polish Tatras are the area of mountain hiking, rock climbing, cycling, speleology and cave tourism, paragliding and skiing in winter. The most popular and frequented terrains of the Polish Tatras are: Morskie Oko Lake, the Kasprowy Peak (1985 m) where is cable railway, the Kocieliska Valley - charming with very interesting landscape and Mt Giewont (1909 m), elevated exactly above Zakopane.

Winter sports - Zakopane is a center for winter sports and the place where many sports and cultural events take place. It is a place where mountain folklore is reported and cultivated and is the highest located city in Poland between 750 to 1000 m above sea level. Zakopane is the most important skiing resort and tourist attraction in the Polish Tatras. The town has become famous not only because of its splendid skiing conditions and the high quality infrastructure but first of all thanks to the international sporting events which have been organized here. The city,  applied unsuccessfully to host the Winter Olympics 2006, is internationally known for its ski jumps, cross-country and biathlon competitions.

The city has been a favourite resting place for artists, politicians, scientists, and culture activists. They have come there to improve their health, watch beautiful views, and experience physical exertion. Zakopane enjoys great reputation all the time. Even now famous activists, coming here, can experience silence and quiet atmosphere and, at the same time, live in comfortable city in which people are honest and hospitable.
