Szczecin - Culture

Location : Szczecin Poland lies on the bank of the Odra River and at the southern end of the Bay of Szczecin, 65 kilometres from the Baltic Sea. Szczecin is the base for the headquarter of the administrative and municipal authorities of the large Western Pomeranian Province the city actively participates in a cross-border organization, Euroregion Pomerania, which is based in Szczecin; it is also involved in wide-ranging foreign cooperation with other European cities and Polish municipalities.

Tourism : Szczecin has a reputation as a 'green city', Szczecin and the Western Pomeranian Province are one of the most attractive tourist regions in Poland. The growing interest of tourists in this region is shown by the 36 percent growth of expenditure on accommodation and catering since 1995. Tourists can use 46 overnight accommodation facilities (hotels, boarding houses, hostels) with almost five thousand beds In Szczecin the features most highly evaluated are its transport accessibility and the dynamic development of its infrastructure, but also the capacity of the market, which is associated with the city's vigorous business development and the prosperity of its inhabitants. In October 1998 Szczecin underwent a rating assessment carried out by two independent companies, and gained the rating 'BBB+'. The high rating gained by the city shows its stable economic situation and good prospects for development.

The Marine School was established in Szczecin in 1947 as a one-faculty college specializing in navigation. Some time later the marine engineering faculty was created to train ship's engineers.

In 1968 the school was turned into a higher education institution retaining its two-faculty organizational structure. The Maritime University of Szczecin is a technical school educating officer staff for the maritime sector, mostly for sea transport and fishing fleets as well as specialists to be employed by ship operators and in the field of port management.

The Szczecin University - Almost 40 thousand of them are students of the 10 higher schools, the largest of which is Szczecin University, founded in 1985. The Szczecin University has its origins in the Academy of Commerce (founded in 1946), the Faculty of Economics and Engineering of the Szczecin Technical University, and the Higher School of Pedagogy. The University is the state-owned school. Since its founding the University continuously increases its research capabilities and the scale and range of education.

In 1998 Szczecin celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Pomeranian Medical University, established in 1948, initially under the name of The University of Physicians in Szczecin. Owing to the significant number of professors settling in Szczecin, the Pomeranian Medical University became the sole school of higher education in this town bestowed with full academic power - to hold doctoral and habilitated doctor studies and grant doctoral degrees.
The passion and efforts of the pioneers resulted in an increasing number of students and academic teachers, a widening scope and rising level of specialised health services, and in scientific research of growing importance.

Banks - Economy - Szczecin is the base for the operations of 39 banks and banking institutions (including 23 commercial banks), 15 leasing companies, and 30 insurance and reinsurance companies. The range and quality of the financial services they offer is close to current standards in European Union countries. Most banks have the status of foreign currency banks entitled to engage in foreign operations, and allow unrestricted access to the national and foreign banking system. The banks also provide full transaction services in national and foreign business, and clearance of payments, foreign credits and guarantees. Szczecin's economy is closely associated with the sea. The fully-equipped maritime port serves shipowners from all over the world. It is also the mother port for two large shipping companies: Polish Steamship Company SA and Euroafrica, while also being the base for many companies of various sizes associated with the port. The most important of these are the shipyards, especially Stocznia Szczecińska SA, the fifth largest manufacturer of modern sea-going vessels in the world.
