University
- The University of Silesia was established in Katowice in 1968 as the
ninth university in Poland and it is an autonomous state university. It now has campuses in four cities in the region: Katowice, Sosnowiec,
Chorzów and Cieszyn. The majority of faculties are located in Katowice. The main University site, located within a distance of a five-
minute-walk from the centre of Katowice, gives access to the many amenities of this progressive city. The University has its origins in the
Higher School of Education which was founded in 1928 - at that time the only higher education institution in the region. Later the school became
a branch of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, the oldest Polish University. Silesian
Theatre of Doll and Actor "Ateneum" Established in 1945, nowadays have
at disposal 2 stages, prepares 5,6 premiers in a season, performs over 300 spectacles annually. Often performs abroad. This theatre specialises
in repertoire for children and recruits children to their most faithful audience. Since the beginning the theatre is firmly connected with local
creative community; it is necessary to mention Bogumil Pasternak music, Zygmunt Smandzil or Jerzy Zitzman plastic art. It is also worth knowing
that among literature chiefs was Gustaw Morcinek and on the placards used to appear such great names as: Jan Dorman, Teofil Ociepka, Krzysztof
Penderecki or Witold Szalonek.
Silesian
Museum. It combines museum of modern art and museum of Silesian culture and history. Museum runs
scientific researches in the every area of Poland. Researches are concerned with history, archaeology, ethnography and technique. In the
museum's resources important part belongs to paintings. Especially valuable is polish paintings' collection from XIX and XX century including
pieces of Aleksander Gierymski, Jan Matejko, Piotr Machalowski, Henryk Rodakowski, Stanislaw Wyspianski and Wladyslaw Podkowinski. For special
notice also deserves created by the Museum Polish Scenery Centre which is gathering and exhibiting collections of projects by outstanding polish
stage-managers. In the sculpture resources exhibited are, interalia, pieces of Xawery Dunikowski, Wladyslaw Hasior and others. Archaeology
Department gains exhibits thanks to their own excavation. In the Ethnography Department there is worth noticing collection of woman's folk
outfit of Bytom's Silesia and Cieszyn's Silesia. Archdiocesan
Museum. The base of the resources of the Museum is middle aged and modern sacral art. It includes rich collections of silesian sacral art
such as paintings and sculptures from the area of diocese from XIV until XVII century. Second part of the museum resources is collection of
paintings of various artists and European schools from XV until XX century.
The Sports-Show Hall - 1927, designed by M. Gintowt, M. Krasinski, A. Zurawski, W. Zalewski, an architectural
complex of the world class, a vanguard structure and form. In the sports-recreation complex: an ice rink, gym halls, a hotel, a restaurant and
sauna. It is generally considered together with the Silesian Insurgents Monument to be the landmark of Katowice. |
