Tromso - Culture |
|
With
many of its ancient wooden buildings lovingly restored, Tromso is a pretty
little city with plenty to please the eye. Walk in the city centre, which
has charming blend of old wooden buildings and modern architecture for a
view of the Tromso Church. The
University of Tromso is the northernmost university in the world and has a
student population of over 13,000. Nearby you'll pass the Meteorological
Institute and the world-renowned Northern Lights Planetarium. Resembling a
rocket's launching pad, the institute was opened in 1989 to provide
scientists with a location to study the remarkable natural phenomenon of
the Northern Ligh Crossing the bridge over Tromso Sound is the beautiful Tromsdalen Parish Church, better known as the Arctic Cathedral. Built in 1965, this modern structure is constructed from concrete and glass and was designed to symbolize the immense strength of the pack ice in the Arctic Ocean. The
Tromso Museum houses an interesting collection of zoological, geological
and ethnographic exhibits. Tromso is considered to be the Arctic capital
of Norway. This museum was created as a historical centre for the
preservation of the Arctic past so prevalent to the area.
