Tonsberg
is situated in the county of Vestfold, which is a rainbow of colours &
landscapes - rich in history and finds from the Viking age; scattered with
beautiful coastal towns and with a coastline of tiny wonderful islands,
idyllic bay's and an excellent boat life. The mild summer breeze joins the
sparkling waters of the fjord and tempts you out onto the water, either
fishing, sailing or in a sailing boat of wood, eileen
or koffen for exampel. Many
visitors have their own favourite location on the coast and mainland of
Vestfold: Tjøme, Holmestrand, Horten, Tønsberg -Sandefjord
and Larvik. And each of these 15 charming towns or municipality's has its
very own personality and history.... Welcome!
Tonsberg
city remains an industrial and shipping centre, with such diverse concerns
as metal shops, shipyards, paper mills, leather processing, and breweries;
it is noted especially for its silverware.
It
was king Håkon håkonsson who built the castle Castrum
Tunsbergis, Norway's largest medieval fortification with a circular wall,
round turrets, citadels and Bredestuen. He was also responsible for the
excavation of the "Canal" or "Kanalen" (Skjelsjasteinsund)
making it navigable for large ships again. He built the royal court at the
foot of Slottsfjellet, and paved way for a Franciscan monastery right in
the middle of town and a hospital at Gunnarsbø.
When
Christianity came at the end of the 9th century, the first
church in the municipality was built on the royal court at Sem, probably a
stave church. Already around the 11th-12th century
the city had several stone built churches: The Lavrans Church, where the
present cathedral now stands, the Maria Church at the market place, St.
Olavs Church, a roundchurch of large dimensions, which was part of the
Premonstratension Monastery (the ruin can be seen at Storgt. 17), Peter's
Church, Michael's Church on Slottsfjellet and Sem Church, which is still
the county's oldest stone church.
Most
tourists know Tjøme, have visited the summer shows or shopped at
the market place. But have you experienced Queen Sonja's prize cup race at
Jarlsberg Race Course or listened to eminent organ recitations or had the
experience of sightseeing by helicopter? Welcome! Golf enthusiasts and
regatta sailors will discover a friendly environment in these parts.
Furthermore we can offer Tønsbergmessen (annual fair), summer
auctions, daily crossings to Strømstad (Sweden) and excursions on board one of
the oldest steamships in Norway and lots more.
Visit
as well the Vestfold County Museum or one of the numerous galleries. At
the Seter cafe you can enjoy seter porridge or homemade food. Stokke old
village collection and Brår farm are certainly worth a visit. Rural
surroundings and recreational areas are also found near the city centre.
Nordbyen
is located to the west of "Slottsfjellet". This is the oldest
part of the town and the oldest house in Tonsberg, Bentegεrden, is
here. The house was probably built in 1720 and is now leased to people who
are capable of taking care of it.
More
than 50 % of the students at TMVS travel to school by bus. Because of
this, the bus station at Tonsberg is a place where lots of students gather
at all times between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
To
take bus to school every day would normally have been quite expensive, but
all the comprehensive school students in Vestfold can by a card, which
allows them to travel free by bus throughout the county for a month. After
a month you have to buy a new sticker for the card. The card, and new
monthly stickers, cost only 140 kr. (about £11 or $18). This saves
students, and their parents, a lot of money.
