Skiing
may only be a part of your winter weekend or winter holiday, or even not a
part of it at all. Lillehammer the small Olympic Resort offering
modern-big city amenities and possibilities, offers a variety of
attractions and activities for both adults and children.
The
Olympic Games are history, but Lillehammer is still one of the most
exciting destinations in Northern Europe. Lillehammer is the city of
culture, exhibitions, festivals and fairs. You’ll find here clean
air, varied scenery and exciting cultural events. Take a walk at downtown
Lillehammer and see the children dazzle off with their Kick-sleighs.
Olympic
slopes offering skiing experience both for skilled, not so skilled and the
beginner, awaits you in the compact and comprehensive ski region of
Lillehammer. It is a thrill
to experience Summer Ski Jumping at Lysgårdsbakkene. This is where
the opening ceremonies for the 1994 Winter Olympics were held. From the
top of the ski jump you get an excellent view of Lillehammer and the
Gudbrandsdal Valley. Here you’ll find Kanthaugen Freestyle Facility
and the Birkebeineren Ski Stadium.
The
Garmo church built in 1690 stands within the Maihaugen open-air museum. It
was pulled down in 1882 and its parts scattered but Anders Sandvig, the
creator of the museum, managed to purchase and reassemble it. The Garmo
church has been reconstructed and now performs many weddings.
Snow
carpets the grounds of the Maihaugen Open-Air Museum at Lillehammer.
Buildings dating from the Middle Ages to the 19th century
occupy the 100-acre museum, founded by former dentist Anders Sandvig in
1887. Artifacts collected by Sandvig fill the buildings, which all came
from the nearby Gudbrandsdalen Valley.
Oygarden,
the deserted farm, was abandoned at the time of the Black Death, 1349 and
lay abandoned until the 17th Century. Nowadays it stands in the
grounds of the Maihaugen Museum.
