Harstad - Culture

The city has 23.000 inhabitants and is North Norway’s cultural power centre. That's also why the "Festspillene i Nord-Norge" (International Music Festival in North Norway) are held every year during a week around midsummer in Harstad. You hear music in pubs, churches and halls, and many cultures meet for an exciting interplay under the midnight sun. The city is located on the largest island of Hinnψya. The islands around Harstad are plentiful, with ample opportunities for fishing and enjoying the great outdoors.

The town of Harstad is characterised by history old & new. A journey through the streets reveals restored buildings, well-kept town houses, renovated pedestrian areas and modern buildings. There are many different restaurants and coffee houses, where you can enjoy local food and drink, or maybe a different, exotic menu.

If you wish to travel along the coast, the Coastal Voyage vessels arrive Harstad, both north and southbound. Good transport links with express boat and ferries make it easy to get about, whether you are travelling in the region or passing through to Lofoten, Senja or Tromsø.

The Adolf Canon is the world’s largest land- based cannon, with a range of 56 km. The battery was built in 1943 by the German occupational forces. In the complex under the gun itself there is an exhibition showing the battery's history, building and planned use. The cannon is located in a restricted military area, and can therefore only be visited during guided tours.

Harstad Church is a modern church built in 1958 in traditional style.

His Royal Highness King Harald V opened the Opera House in Harstad in 1992. This is the largest opera house in North-Norway. Concerts, shows, theatres are arranged in the Opera house. It also contains the public library and a hotel.
