Fredrikstad - Culture |
|
Originally
built in 1667, the Drawbridge was subsequently rebuilt on several
occasions. The bridge was raised between taps and reveille, a
task-requiring close on 30 soldiers to perform. If the letter carrier came
too late, the bag with the mail was sent over the moat by an aerial cable.
Isegran
is the first place in Fredrikstad that is mentioned in history. The Earl
Alv Erlingson – known after his death as Mindre ("Lesser")
Alv - built a castle here in the second half of the 13th
century. The
place, where Kongsten Fort is situated was called Galgenberg, Gallows
Hill. The fortification was build here in the 1680's. Today the Kongsten
Fort is scheduled as an ancient monument.
The
town's excellent harbour, protected by the island of Kråkerøy,
is open year-round. Saw milling, shipping, and fishing are the main
industries; lumber, chemicals, granite, and feldspar are exported.
Fredrikstad is known for its workshops that create models for the
distinctive Norwegian products, notably glass, silverware, and textiles.
The surrounding area is rich in rock carvings, monumental stones, and
graves from the early Christian era. |
