Fredrikstad - Culture

Fredrikstad has 67,000 inhabitants and is the birthplace of the Bradt brothers. The Old Town, with its fortresses, is a great monument of the past, and it is unique of its kind. Most other fortresses like this have been destroyed in the name of progress, but Fredrikstad have managed to preserve the memories of the 18th century, much to our enjoyment. The regional museum contains collections of art and cultural history.

Originally built in 1667, the Drawbridge was subsequently rebuilt on several occasions. The bridge was raised between taps and reveille, a task-requiring close on 30 soldiers to perform. If the letter carrier came too late, the bag with the mail was sent over the moat by an aerial cable.

The Southern Gate, which dates from 1731, is placed between Christian’s and prince Georg’s bastions. It is also called the Vaterland’s Gate. In everyday speech this is called the Black gate.

Isegran is the first place in Fredrikstad that is mentioned in history. The Earl Alv Erlingson – known after his death as Mindre ("Lesser") Alv - built a castle here in the second half of the 13th century.

The place, where Kongsten Fort is situated was called Galgenberg, Gallows Hill. The fortification was build here in the 1680's. Today the Kongsten Fort is scheduled as an ancient monument.

Twenty kilometres ahead – 3000 years back in time. Along highway no. 110 between Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg you find the Prehistoric Road with lots of sights side by side.

The town's excellent harbour, protected by the island of Kråkerøy, is open year-round. Saw milling, shipping, and fishing are the main industries; lumber, chemicals, granite, and feldspar are exported. Fredrikstad is known for its workshops that create models for the distinctive Norwegian products, notably glass, silverware, and textiles. The surrounding area is rich in rock carvings, monumental stones, and graves from the early Christian era.
