|
The local people are known to be cheerful, pleasant, straight to the point, and very hospitable. Bodø is the northernmost town on the Coastal Route and a modern commercial centre situated in beautiful natural surroundings with views of the Børvasstindene peaks in the south and Landegode and Lofoten mountains in the north. Bodø’s archipelago has a multitude of small island communities and a rich bird life. No othewr ton in the world has a greater population of sea eagles. If you are lucky you may see the eagle glide across the sky, and this sight will entitle you to membership of the world’s only sea eagle club!
Places
of interest include the 13th-century Bodin Church and the Bodø
Cathedral (Lutheran), a modern edifice (consecrated 1956). The
cathedral is built as a basilica in the Gothic style.
The Open-Air Museum and the Nordland Museum are also worth a visit. Løp
Gamle Gård is an old bailiff's farm, which dates from 1651. State
Institution of higher education is also situated here. Bodø's
far northern site enables the midnight sun to be seen for about a month (2
June – 10 July).
Saltstraumen is a paradise for ocean fishing. The specialty is saithe. There are also great opportunities for mountain hiking, walks along heritage trails to sites of ancient settlements dating back 10,000 years, or simply relaxing in beautiful natural surroundings close to hiking trails, picnic and barbecue areas. |
