Ferrara
is a city to be enjoyed walking down its streets, discovering its
character of magnificent Renaissance capital and finding out how its
present has arisen from that splendid past. The historical memories follow
you everywhere, in the fine palaces or in the small medieval streets, and
once a year they explode with the colours and sounds of the "palio"
of Saint George, A city born on the water, Ferrara still shows the marks
of a close relation with its big river, the Po: the design of the streets,
for example, or the modem tourist harbour, or the network of canals which
surround it reaching the Adriatic Sea where the Po-Delta Park stretches
for kilometres with its woods, pine-woods, lagoons, beaches and modem
resorts. A peculiar atmosphere can be enjoyed in the city centre, between
shops and cafes, where the rhythm of life seems to be beaten out by the
silent passing of hundreds of bicycles.
Ferrara should be explored to
the full, walking through its streets and discovering throughout the
magnificence of this Renaissance city, understanding the present from the
glorious past. Its history can be seen in both the sumptuous palazzos and
the narrow Medieval streets, with a yearly celebration in the colours and
ancient music of the "palio di San Giorgio". A city shaped over
the centuries by the River Po, Ferrara maintains close links with its
river, both in the layout of the streets and the modern holiday port
formed by the San Paolo basin, or in the network of canals which surround
it as far as the Adriatic, where the great Parco del Delta stretches with
its woods, pines, lagoons and modern beach resorts.
The
city centre has its own special atmosphere among the shops and cafés,
where the rhythm of life is played out against the quiet passing of
hundreds of bicycles. In the gardens of all sizes, cloisters and
courtyards the silence is only broken in the summer evenings when the
"Aterforum" festivals are held, pioneering the ancient musical
tradition of Ferrara, together with top-rate events at the Civic Theatre
and of the Ferrara musical committee, led by Claudio Abbado. Then there is
another annual music festival - that of buskers, whose sounds fill the
streets and piazzas for a whole week, to the delight of thousands of fans.
Enthusiasts of figurative art should not miss the great exhibitions staged
at the Palazzo dei Diamanti, where only recently the
works of Dali, Miro, Monet, Chagall and many others have been hosted.
Wonderful are the facade of cathedral,
the renaissance frescos of Palazzo Schiafanoia and the stateliness of Este
Castle.
Thus from the many different
opportunities, everybody can find what they are looking for - art,
tradition, markets, trade fairs and congresses, folklore and cuisine, and
much more, in a city where the visitor can choose whatever he or she
pleases.
