Kinsale- History

The present town dates mainly to the 18th century, but at an earlier period it belonged to the De Courcis family, who built the castle. It received a charter of incorporation from Edward III (reigned 1327–77).

Kinsale is a town and seaport of County Cork, Ireland. It is situated on Kinsale Harbour, at the estuary of the River Bandon.

The Battle of Kinsale, fought in 1601 between a combined Spanish, an Irish force and English armies, was a turning point in Irish history. William Penn, English Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania, and his father held office in the town.

Two very fine star-shaped fortresses built in the 17th century guard the harbour.

Take a trip too to the Old Head of Kinsale for magnificent cliff scenery. It was off here that the Lusitania was sunk in 1915 with a loss of over 1,500 lives.

With the neighbouring villages of Scilly and Summer Cove, the town is much frequented by visitors and hosts an annual regatta. It has a fishery pier and a harbour and is a sport-fishing centre. Manufactures include sheet steel, electrical components, and yacht equipment. Natural gas is produced as well.
