Kells Co. Meath - Culture

 

Most visitors come because they have heard of the religious remains but there are excellent facilities round Kells for sports and country pursuits like golf, tennis, walking, fishing and horse ridings as well. There are also good restaurants and pubs in the small town, suiting all tastes.

Kells has a large swimming pool with a paddling pool next to it, housed in the modern building just off the Dublin Rd.

Fair Green was designated the new venue for the town fairs in 1804, which were previously held four times a year on the streets of Kells.

The Canons Regular of the Augustinian Abbey of St Mary founded an abbey here in the mid 12th century. A mural tower, part of the town’s medieval wall, survived on the south of Canon Street.

The Irish architect Francis Johnston designed the courthouse that was built in 1801.

Visit also St Columcille/St Columbia’s House (an old church), St Columba's church, St John's Cemetery, and The Market Cross (from the 9th century).

Ciaran's Well and the High Crosses are roughly 5 km from the town in the direction of Old castle. There is a festival (1st of August) to celebrate the curative power of the water from Ciaran's Well.

You will have excellent coarse fishing possibilities at the Blackwater, a typical limestone river.

Make a walking tour at the Loughcrew Hills in County Meath that draw walkers' impressions into new directions with its natural beauty. Here you can relax in a stress-free environment and feel the beauty of the countryside.

Meath is excellent hunting country. There are several meets of the Meath hounds in the general area of Kells, including the traditional Boxing Day (December 26th) meet in the town.
