Kells Co. Meath - Culture |
|
Kells
has a large swimming pool with a paddling pool next to it, housed in the
modern building just off the Dublin Rd. Fair
Green was designated the new venue for the town fairs in 1804, which were
previously held four times a year on the streets of Kells. The
Canons Regular of the Augustinian Abbey of St Mary founded an abbey here
in the mid 12th century. A mural tower, part of the
town’s medieval wall, survived on the south of Canon Street.
Visit
also St Columcille/St Columbia’s House (an old church), St Columba's
church, St John's Cemetery,
and The Market Cross (from the 9th century). Ciaran's
Well and the High Crosses are roughly 5 km from the town in the direction
of Old castle. There is a festival (1st of August) to celebrate
the curative power of the water from Ciaran's Well. You
will have excellent coarse fishing possibilities at the Blackwater, a
typical limestone river.
Meath
is excellent hunting country. There are several meets of the Meath hounds
in the general area of Kells, including the traditional Boxing Day
(December 26th) meet in the town. |
