Adare - History

Adare is a picturesque village, situated at the heart of Irish culture and history. It is located on the N21, south west of Limerick City in Limerick County.

The Third Earl of Dunraven built a street with thatched cottages and well trimmed hedges at the gates of his early Victorian Manor on the 1820's. History had already endowed Adare with an exquisite backdrop to further please the eye - an ivied Norman Castle beside the River Maigue and the best collection of ruined medieval friaries inIreland.

The Adare Heritage Centre tells the story of the development of the town from the building of the Norman castle by the banks of the River Maigue in 1233 to the present day using realistic models, enactments and audiovisuals. It shows the busy day-to-day life of Adare from the 13th to 16th centuries, and the changes that came to it, with war and rebellions helping to cause it to wane, and then how it waxed again under the Dunraven family.

Adare is often described as the prettiest village in Ireland. Regularly a County winner in the Tidy Towns competition, Adare scooped the national title in 1976 and has been a contender ever since.
