Selfoss - Culture

Selfoss has much to offer, it is the communications centre of the South and far enough away from the stresses of city life.

The city is an ideal touring centre for visitors in the South, as many of the attractions of South Iceland are in easy reach of the town.

Popular tourist attractions such as Þingvellir, the ancient site of the Icelandic parliament, Geysir hot spring area, the massive Gullfoss waterfall & Mount Hekla are all in the vicinity.

The Great Geysir came to life only once in 1935, and as quickly went back to sleep. It is believed that it came into existence around the end of the 13th century.

Gullfoss waterfall - Golden Falls - on the Hvítá River (a tributary of the Ölfusá) is fed by the melt waters of the Lang Glacier on the central plateau, falling down 105 feet (32 m) to the southern farming region.

An active volcano for centuries, the mountain Hekla is one of the most famous in the world. Old tales tell of the belief that the souls of the condemned travelled through Hekla's crater on their way to hell. The mountain is about 1491 m high and the whole mountain ridge of Hekla is about 40 km long.

Visit the Árnessýsla Art Gallery that was founded due to a generous gift of paintings in 1963 from the family of Bjarnveig Bjarnadóttir.
