Keflavik- Culture

This busy town owes it development mainly to its fishing and other industries and also to the growth of Keflavík International Airport.

It is a major centre of fishing & fish processing, although in recent years tourism has played an increasingly important role in the local economy. The town's hotels and restaurants are among the best in Iceland.

Keflavík ports are used mainly for the handling of fish and ships of large draught. The main harbour is accessible to 150 m long vessels with a draught of up to 14 m.

There is a Regional Folk Museum and a number of good hiking routes in the vicinity, such as Bergid (“The Cliff”), which offers a panoramic view across the bay.

The city is also an excellent base for exploring much of the Reykjanes on foot as well as for visiting the nearby Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is a unique wonder of nature, a pool of natural mineral rich geothermal seawater in the middle of a lava field. Blue-green algae and white Silica mud form a light natural sediment on the bottom of the lagoon and give the lagoon its soft, milky, aquamarine colour. The Blue Lagoon was created when hot water from the nearby "Svartsengi" geothermal power plant that formed due to heat exchange was discharged into the adjacent lava field.

Close to the Blue Lagoon, numerous geothermic phenomenon can be seen, especially around the town of Grindavik. You'll find bubbling pools of water, fumerolles and sulfatares. A huge whistling can be heard near fumerolles. The yellowish colour of the stones in the pool shows the presence of sulfatar.

Leira, not far away, offers one of Iceland’s best courses for golfers. There are other facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool, sea-angling, and whale spotting, with the possibility of sighting whales, and cruises to the island of Eldey, home to the world's largest gannet colony.
