It
is a major centre of fishing & fish processing, although in recent
years tourism has played an increasingly important role in the local
economy. The town's hotels and restaurants are among the best in Iceland. Keflavík
ports are used mainly for the handling of fish and ships of There
is a Regional Folk Museum and a number of good hiking routes in the
vicinity, such as Bergid (“The Cliff”), which offers a
panoramic view across the bay. The
city is also an excellent base for exploring much of the Reykjanes on foot
as well as for visiting the nearby Blue Lagoon.
Close
to the Blue Lagoon, numerous geothermic phenomenon can be seen, especially
around the town of Grindavik. You'll find Leira,
not far away, offers one of Iceland’s best courses for golfers.
There are other facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool, sea-angling,
and whale spotting, with the possibility of sighting whales, and cruises
to the island of Eldey, home to the world's largest gannet colony. |
