The HarbourAs Ísafjördur boasts all that a town its size can be expected to offer, tourism here is a growing industry. It has superb facilities for outdoor activities, offering many interesting routes for the hiker. The sheltered Tungudalur valley is the town’s main area for outdoor activities.

Not far away, there are ski slopes for beginners and advanced alike, equipped with state-of-the-art lifts and facilities. The area also lends itself particularly well to cross-country skiing. Experience the magnificent natural beauty of the West Fjords!

Tourist agencies offer a variety of sightseeing excursions around Ísafjördur and surrounding areas, to Hornstrandir and to other parts of the region, giving the tourist a choice between travelling on land, on sea, or by air.

Here one finds the oldest group of buildings in the Iceland, dating from 1736-1788, now a maritime museum, as well the most modern buildings of our time.

A visit to the town of Ísafjördur brings you a strong human and historical interest. They say that this part of Iceland has fostered more speakers of the Althing, Iceland’s parliament, than any other part of the country! Three ministers of the last government were born and raised in Ísafjördur - out of a total of 10!

From Ísafjördur you will also have memories of friendly people in a fisherman’s town, who live in a fairy tale landscape, sheltered by steep mountains and guided by their inhabitants.
