Hveragerdi - Culture |
|
The
existence of the town, which has a population of 1700, is primarily based
on this energy. This small and friendly town is located directly on top of
an active volcanic belt, which stretches from the southwest tip of Iceland
to the northeast tip. For many years, thousands of
visitors, Icelanders and foreigners alike, have visited Hveragerði
every week. One of its attractions is the geothermal energy, the town is
built in an area of hot springs, and this is the derivation of its name (Hvera-gerði
= Hot-Spring Area). Hveragerði is renowned
for its natural health sanatorium where people can be treated with mud
baths, jacuzzis, hot pots and saunas. The municipal swimming pool is one
of the largest in the country, 50 metres long with hot tubs. It
is one of Iceland's principal tourist towns, offers good tourist
facilities like hotels, guesthouses, shops offering woollen goods and
souvenirs, restaurants and greenhouses selling their produce such as fresh
vegetables, flowers and pot plants which are grown in abundance.
The town is a popular stopover for buses taking visitors on day trips. The downside of this are the touristy souvenir and curio shops that have sprung up around town. |
