Zalaegerszeg - History

Zalaegerszeg is town and seat of Zala megye (county) in western Hungary. It lies on the right bank of the Zala River. 'Szeg' means corner or recess obviously referring to the former geographical situation of the city.

The city has been inhabited since the pre-historic age, its name was first mentioned in a document in 1247.

In 1389 there must have been a church opening up its door to the believers.

In 1421 Zalaegerszeg was referred to in documents either as a village or a market town, however, it must have been a market town in 1446.

The town was of medieval origin and was a frontier fort in Hungary's wars with Turkey (16th–17th century). The Turks never occupied it.

The Headquarters of Zala County were constructed in 1732.

It received the title of "corporate town" in 1885. It was during the following decade and the decade between 1920 and 1930 that the town underwent its most significant development before World War II.
