Zalaegerszeg - Culture

The city has four culture centres as well as an exclusive Town Concert & Exhibition Hall, built in 1904 as a synagogue and opened up in 1994.

The 'House of Craftsmen' was erected in wonderful surroundings, on the shore of Gébárti Lake, for traditional craftsmen. The lake, in the northern part of the town, north of the River Zala, was formed by damming a brook in 1975.

On the banks of the Zala River there is an open-air Göcsej village museum. The Göcsej is the local region of south western Hungary noted for the peculiarities of its dialect.

The museum displays more than 30 buildings, including timber houses, stables, and a water mill.

Visit also the twin-spired Baroque parish church and the County Council House Chapel (1761–77). The church with its 44 m-high towers was built between 1750 and 1760. Johann Cymbal painted its frescos.

The theatre, which was granted the name of Sándor Hevesi, was opened up in 1982 being considered as one of the best theatres in Hungary. Sándor Hevesi  was a great reformer of Hungarian dramatic art during the first half of the 20th century.

On Deák tér (square), on the site of the former Border Castle, commemorated by a memorial stone, stands the County Hall building, which houses the county court today.
