King Andras I. chose this place for his burial-ground and established a Benedictine abbacy here in 1055. This fact has had an effect on the life and development of the village.

Tihany is the pearl of this region, Hungary, moreover Europe. It is a gem in the centre of the "Hungarian Sea". There are lots of geyser-cones built from geyserite on the surface of the volcanogenic peninsula. You can find a lot of plant- and animal-curiosities here due to the special climate and two lakes without an outlet. This is why this peninsula was declared the first nature conservation area of Hungary in 1952

The church of the abbacy was the culture and intellectual centre of the settlement over the centuries and nowadays, too. The thatched houses around the church and abbey have the spirit of the 19th century. The outdoor museum shows you the life of the fishing and agricultural inhabitants of this almost thousand-year-old village.

The walks from the church offer an unparalleled view. The luxury villas and elegant hotels leads your eye to the East, to the nearby Balatonfüred, which is considered the capital of the Lake Balaton. The start of the sailing season is celebrated here in May as well as the famous Anna Ball in late July.

On the southern tip of the peninsula is Tihany Rev, the harbour for the ferry between the North and South coast. Between May and September the ferry runs every 20 minutes or more frequently, as required. There are four ferries on duty in high season.

There are several mini wine farms where one can sample the excellent wines produced on the peninsula. On the southern tip of the peninsula is Tihany Rev, the harbour for the ferry between the North and South coast.
