Szombathely - Culture

Szombathely is an ancient city dating back to Roman times, when it was called Sabaria. It is located in the west of Hungary, almost on the Austrian border. Not very much remains of its Roman past.

Although some of the mosaics of a Roman palace have been recovered and may be seen adjacent to the Cathedral, which was built on top of old Roman ruins.

The city’s most beutiful square is the Berzsenyi tér (square).

The fine Baroque cathedral and the Episcopal Palace (Püspökvár) were built between 1781 and 1813. Extensive World War II damage to the cathedral was repaired in 1947.

Szombathely was home to a large Jewish population until the Holocaust of World War II. Its fine Synagogue survives today.

There is a memorial that commemorates the victims of the Holocaust.

The Savaria Museum opened more than 90 years ago offers two permanent and several temporary exhibitions.

In the city there is also a cinema called Savaria.

You should take at least a day to relax at the peaceful spa of Bük , between Sopron and Szombathely.
