Székesfehérvár - Culture

 

Székesfehérvár is one of Hungary’s most ancient cities. The restored ancient monuments, buildings, the street-lightning that fits the atmosphere of the city, and the stoned city square - all recall the historic atmosphere of it.

There is an independent cinema in the city, and in the Alba Plaza shopping centre there is another one, the Cinema City that has 10 air-conditioned showing-rooms. The Mihály Vörösmarty Theatre is 125 years old. 

The Ybl Museum houses a collection of Miklós Ybl, the great Hungarian architect.

The ruins of the medieval cathedral where many Hungarian kings were crowned are carefully preserved. Some fine Baroque buildings survive, including the bishop's palace.

Visit also the interesting sights such as Saint Anna Chapel, Saint István Király Museum, City Hall, Budenz Ház, the Museum of Dolls, Fekete Sas museum of Pharmacy, Medieval Garden of Ruins, the Royal Cathedral, the Orb, Episcopal Court, Rác temple, Bory Castle, Civic Gallery.

One finds in the city statues of Vörösmarty Mihály, King Saint László, Watthai Ferenc, Kálmánycsehy Domonkos and Nepomuki Saint János.

Sport fans can go to the Bregyó Sports Centre that offers tennis-courts, a cinder track, a small & a big football pitch and basketball courts. There are also tennis courts in the Videoton Education Centre with its well-furnished fitness centre. The modern-furnished City Sport Swimming pool gives visitors remarkable services.

There are many places for those who would like to relax. Within a short drive you’ll reach Lake Velence, and since there is a cycle path going from the city and around the lake, it can be approached by bicycle as well.

Enjoy the nature of Vértes Hills, which is excellent for taking trips, and walks in the open air, and only 30 min. drive from Székesfehérvár.

There are many green belts and big parks within the city with modern playgrounds for children.

The city has an active cultural life. There are high-standard programmes such as the Fehérvár Fair (in September) and the Crown Fair (in the spring).

Royal Days is a one-week’s festival giving home to dance groups coming from various countries, and it always attracts big crowds of people. Floralia - the spring-welcoming festival  become also a tradition now.
