Pécs, founded two
thousand years ago, is the capital of the Baranya County. Being the biggest town of the
Transdanubian area (population 180,000), Pécs is the natural
agglomeration centre of the South Transdanubian region (population
1,000,000). As a university centre it
influences the economical development of the town by supporting the
appearance of knowledge-intense and innovative technologies. The economy of the town can be
characterised with lively trade, developed tertiary sector and processing
industry, developing
engineering and electronic industry. Pécs provides favourable
conditions for those who intend to invest, trade and settle down:
The town, located at the
Southern slope of Mecsek Hill, has got a Mediterranean climate. This is
the warmest region of the country with a lot of sunshine. Pécs is big enough to
provide all conditions for a pleasant way of living, without the
disadvantages of metropolitan towns and increasing urban problems. Hundreds of foreign
entrepreneurs, managers and experts already work in Pécs
appreciating their new environment. Pécs provides high
level of dwelling conditions at much lower prices compared to Budapest. Smaller and larger hotels can
accommodate several thousand guests. The town is the biggest
trading centre of the region with excellent shopping facilities at a
European level. Beside several thousands of retail shops international
chains are also present like METRO, Julius Meinl, Spar, DM, Baumax, etc. More than a thousand catering
facilities, among them 250 restaurants, operate in the town with domestic
and international cuisine (Chinese, Arabian, Greek, etc.), including
multilingual companies as well (McDonald's, Pizza Hut). Pécs also provides a
wide range of cultural programs. The National Theatre is 100 years old.

reputation, music education is of high level at all stages. There are more
than 30 museums and several art galleries within the town. Concerning sports and
recreation there are four swimming pools, two stadiums, an ice stadium and
several tennis courts. In the close vicinity of Pécs it is easy to
find a golf course, horse trekking or sailing facility. Several billiard
pools, bowling places, casinos and gambling places can also be found.

level of health service. There are more than 1,000 physicians of which
more than 200 run a private praxis as well. The level of medical services
at the clinics of the Pécs University Medical School is of European
standard. Pécs
Industrial Park The most important objective
of owners of the developing Pécs Industrial Park (The town of Pécs,
MBVH Co. Ltd., Pécs-Baranya Chamber of Commerce) and managers of
the Pécs Industrial Park Public (non profit) Company controlling
the development is to provide an ideal environment and maximum support to
all investors. The Pécs Industrial
Park is located at the Eastern gate of Pécs occupying a 150 ha
area. Residential areas, trading and transportation facilities and
industrial estates under reconstruction surround this land. From transportation viewpoints
the Park is ideally located: its "main road" is the meeting
point of four national main roads leading to the town, industrial railways
and an adjacent regulating yard are also available. There is an easy access to the
city centre: 10 min by car, 15 min by bus. The implementation of
investments of any type is facilitated by high capacity infrastructure for
satisfying every demand. Keeping EU standard
environmental regulations and maintaining the 40 percent rate of green
fields achieve the formation of a quality environment. The adequately allotted area
provides optimum location for the planned trading, industrial-production
or institutional facilities. The required size of the basic
area may vary between 4,000 and 200,000 m2. Offices, stores can be leased
within the territory of the Industrial Park the choice of which is
continuously developed. The planned system of
institutions provides a unique background to all entrepreneurs: Customs centre Logistics centre TQM centre Technology transfer
institution Incubator house for
entrepreneurs The public company controlling
the project, jointly with its local partners, will provide full-scale
support to investors beside conventional industrial park services
(licensing, search for local partners):
At the
beginning of the 18th century a French traveller made the following
remarks about our city, Pécs: "...we came to rest in Pécs,
which is a pleasantly situated town on the slopes of some hills where vine
is grown. The city is rather longer than wider, I haven't seen a town as
lovely as Pécs in Hungary..." Almost all the travellers and
guests coming to town have had the same impression about Pécs and
this has not changed through the centuries. Undoubtedly; no matter where
we arrive from, the location of the town is fascinating. At the end of the 18th
century, on one occasion Count Hofmannsegg had no other choice but to stay
in the town. He was so much charmed by the city; its location, romantic
streets, antique houses and most of all its friendly people the he left
the town a little depressed and down-hearted. The impression of Pécs
made on him even got him to take lessons in Hungarian during his stay. He
put the following notes in his diary: "This is a medium size city in
beautiful surroundings, one of the loveliest I have ever seen in
Hungary." The well-known doctor, Richard
Bright also praised the town and its people. True, the two cannot be
separated. The historical city, the gorgeous countryside, the pleasant
climate, the delicious grapes and the wine have had impact on the citizens
and made them friendly, free and easy people. Pécs people have been
known for their hospitality for centuries. In pre-Turkish times, a
chronicler, Miklós Oláh made the same remarks. Like the citizens, the city has changed, as well. All the citizens of Pécs from ordinary people to highly respected leaders have the city at their hearts. All the mayors responsible for the town, from János Aidinger to the present mayor, have devoted much of their time to make the city popular.
No matter where you look at it
from, Pécs is a friendly, humane town. Walking in its twisty
streets you feel close to nature even if you do not see a tree. There are
only a few parks as the city is not wide enough for more. However,
wherever you walk in the downtown area, at the end of street you can
always bump into something from nature, whether it be part of the Mecsek
hills, the Misina peak, the Kálvária, the Makár, the
Havi or the remote Jakab hills. If a Pécs citizen longs for nature,
just steps out his house, walks to the end of some streets and there he
is, in nature in the hills. |
