Cultural institutionsThe Youth and Part-time Club is an institution for youngsters to entertain themselves. In these organizations programmes with different themes, lectures and creative activities are held. The photo Gallery can be found here with its periodic exhibitions. The Miskolc Bartók Choir perform here. This is an important part of the musical life of the town; the Race Dancing Club is internationally famous and ranks highly in international competitions.
The Ady Cultural Centre organizes the cultural life of that part of the town which is at the eastern foot of the Bükk. Besides the different cultural programmes the best folk dance group of the town, the Szinvavölgyi folk dance group also performs here. Its national and international productions, tours and the result of their competitions are significant. The children's folk dance group guarantees recruitment and it is already well known at their age group. This
club organizes performances of the "Hungarian theatres beyond the
border" in the Diósgyõr Castle. The "Borsod
spinnery" event is also held here. It is a meeting of different folk
genres organized every year. The club also helps organize the Kaláka
International Folk Festival, which is the most important event of this
genre in Hungary. The Central Cultural Management Office co-ordinates the big cultural events of the town. It publishes the Miskolc Programme, which is the events guide of the cultural institutions of the town. Besides publishing books popularizing Miskolc it organizes celebrations in the town. Among these is the St. Steven day programme in the Diósgyõr Castle. The office also organizes organ concerts called Collegium Musicum in the Avas Monument Church. Musical life Music forms the richest and most colourful type of art of the cultural life of the town. A bustling and full Concert Hall and the public's lively enthusiasm can characterize the concerts. The Miskolc Symphonic Orchestra has been serving the musical life of the town for 30 years. The artistic director of the orchestra is Kovács László, who has been awarded the Liszt prize. Excellent artists of the international concert circuit work with him. Lamberto Gardelli, Richardo Muti, Aldo Ceccalo, Jurij Szimonov, Kobayashi Kenichiro and many others have conducted the orchestra.
The repertoire of the orchestra consists of the most significant works of the universal musical compositions of each significant composer from each period. Their work is kept on records and CD-s. The orchestra was awarded the Bartók-Pásztori Ditta prize for playing works of contemporary composers. The choirs are important groups in musical life. Miskolc has many international-ranked choirs. Children, teenagers and adult choirs have won several international competitions and received national and international honours. The International Choirs Meeting is a place for local and invited choirs to meet in every year. The choir festival of the denominational schools is an important event. The organ evenings in the Avas Monument Church contribute to the fullness of concert life. The most important organists in Hungarian concert life take part in these events. |
