Kecskemét - Culture |
|
Kecskemét's
polygonal main square is surrounded by public buildings and by a great Roman Catholic church and a Franciscan monastery. The Franciscan Church is the oldest building of the town; it surely existed already in the 15th century. The Catholic and Calvinist believers used it until 1564 as well. In the middle of the 17th century it was taken over by the Franciscan friars. The
synagogue (1862) has in its courtyard the remains of an older synagogue (1818). The
Town Hall, in the very heart of the city, is one of the most beautiful work of early secession. The
Evangelist church was built in the last years of the Turkish rule. The building has only preserved some traces of the Gothic style. Ornamental Palace, built in 1912, is the most spectacular and showy Hungarian building of the secession of the centenary. Visit
the József Katona Theatre, Ciróka Puppet Theatre, Town & Hollywood Multiplex Cinema. There
are many museums like József Katona Museum, Hungarian Museum of Photography, Museum of Hungarian Naive Art, Museum of Hungarian Folk
Art-crafts, Michelangelo Museum of Medical and Pharmacological
History, Szórakaténusz Toy Museum as well.
With fitness centres, tennis courts, four sports halls, stadiums, a go-cart ring, thermal baths, an indoor swimming pool, and a bowling centre, Kecskemét offers good sporting facilities for its visitors. Enjoy the Leisure Centre at Széktó that has a botanical garden and sports, beach, water sports and cultural opportunities for families. |
