Balatonfϋred - History

Balatonfϋred is a resort town in Veszprém megye (county), central Hungary and lies on the north shore of Lake Balaton that is only 600 square km big.

All sides of the Lake Balaton are marvellous, huge beach, you can walk in the water, without danger, several hundred meters - at some places even a km- from the shore. The water warms up easily, because of it’s shallowness.

The name of the city means: a place where there are lots of quails. Balatonfϋred is an ancient settlement which was already inhabited during the reign of the Roman Empire.

Its name was first mentioned in the land register of the Abbey of Tihany in 1211. There were several settlements in the Middle Ages in the place of the present Balatonfüred. First of all Füred which still exists but which has had a major role only since the age of reform.

It has been known for at least 250 years as a health spa and resort. There are 11 medicinal springs in the area that are said to have a stimulating effect on the heart and nerves.

The foothills of the Bakony Mountains to the north protect the town from cold winds and help make the district one of the most celebrated wine-growing regions of Hungary.

The shipping on Lake Balaton was 150 years old in 1996. The steamer Kisfaludy got under way for her first voyage on the birthday of Széchenyi István, September 21, 1846. Only after 1888 when the Balaton Steamship Share Company was established did organized shipping make real progress.
