Volendam - Culture

Downtown  Volendam is a picturesque fishing town with characteristic small houses, canals and lift bridges. Many tourists lose their way in the Labyrinth of the "Doolhof", where a maze of narrow streets and alleys puts the tourist into confusion.

If you wish to see traditional costumes you would have a good chance to do so, if you went to the former fishing villages around the IJsselmeer (formerly Zuider Sea). Volendam is the ideal place for it, and is not far from Amsterdam, and offer best opportunities. The costumes of this old town are world-renowned. Across the entire world there hang portraits of people who have had themselves photographed in Volendam costume at the time of their visit to the place.

Boys with wooden shoesThe most famous part of the Dutch costume are the wooden shoes. Not too long ago they were approved for industrial use by European Community regulations, something Dutch farmers have known for centuries of course! Wooden shoes are therefore not only abundant in souvenir shops, but are also worn by many farmers and bulb-growers as cheap, long-lasting working shoes.

Besides its folk-costume, this old town is primarily known for its incomparable eels, its world-famous performers such as BZN en de Cats and naturally FC Volendam football club.

When visiting this beautiful town, you should certainly not omit a visit to the Volendam Museum. Besides old interiors and costumes, the museum also contains a unique cigar-brand house made from more than 7,000,000 cigar brands.

Harbor viewVolendam, the old fishing village on the IJsselmeer, also boasts of its, sports, music and, of course fish. The harbour backs onto numerous tiny cottages. Did you know that during holidays and on the Volendammerdijk large parts of the population still wear their traditional costumes?
