Scheveningen - Culture

Scheveningen was and is, an extremely famous town for its Curing and Healing Treatment Techniques. The tourist industry in Scheveningen goes back more than a century,  as at the turn of the last century,  people would travel to the town to follow a health cure. The Kurhaus, or cure-house, now a splendid hotel, still reminds the inhabitants of this period.

Over the last few years, however, Scheveningen has undergone extensive works, including the development of new facilities along the promenade, a casino, a Circus-theatre, a mega-cinema, a Pier and an indoor shopping centre.

Scheveningen offers great opportunities for a day out.  Scheveningen boasts excellent accessibility. Scheveningen is extremely easy to get to,  and was also the name of the project which introduced facilities for visitors to the resort and the beach, including parking garages, shuttle buses and direct tram connections between The Hague and the coast of Scheveningen.

Most hotels carry brochures that detail places of interest both historic and new. The Dutch transit system is incredible and you'll find hotel personnel more than willing to assist you in short-term travel arrangements such as day trips. If the comfort of a cab appeals to you, most quality hotels can arrange for one to pick you up at the entrance door. I was surprised at how reasonable the prices were and, at least in my experience, most of the drivers spoke English quite well. Plus, many of them were willing to offer suggestions on the best places to visit and the most practical ways to get there, which proved to be very helpful along the way.

Dutch buffets to be quite good in general. Almost everyone seems to offer a wide variety of fruits, cheese, bread, and pastry. Plus, in the summer months, eating outside cafe style is very popular in Holland.  Tables that are decorated in European style are lined up in multiple rows and cluster arrangements. It can be very crowded, but it's all part of the Dutch experience.

Summer months bring a multitude of festivals. There is an annual kite festival that is usually held in June and the sand festival (usually in May) is well worth experiencing. Jazz festivals add a certain ambiance to the afternoons and evenings and you can't imagine the beauty of the firework displays that take place in the late summer. Seeing them over the water is breathtaking and well worth photographing.

On New Year's Eve Scheveningen’s fireworks are set off with wild abandon. We are not sure whether the Dutch police simply turn a blind eye on that evening or whether there isn't a law against it, but it can get pretty wild in some places. The best thing to do is find a balcony with an overhang or view all the celebrating from a hotel or restaurant. Shortly after midnight the commotion stops and it's safer to enter the streets again.
