Culture
& Architecture
Rotterdam was named the cultural capital of Europe
for 2001. Because Rotterdam was
heavily bombed during WW2, most of the original centre got demolished. The
result after reconstruction has been a town featuring ultra-modern
architecture next to older buildings from the 17th century. One of the
most prominent pieces of modern architecture are the cube-houses by Piet
Blom. The whole 'Blaak' area features many pieces of modern architecture
Recently
a new bridge was built in Rotterdam. It's nicknamed 'De Zwaan' (The Swan)
and is visible from miles around. Currently a new area is under
construction just on the other side of the Erasmus Bridge called 'Kop van
Zuid'. This is where passenger ships used to set off from for the US.

Rotterdam's most prestigious museum is the 'Boymans van Beuningen' museum.
It features
many important pieces of modern art. Apart from this museum, one could
combine one's stay in Rotterdam
with a visit to other museums such as: Kunsthal (varying modern art
exhibitions), Schieland Huis (local history) and the Volkenkundig Museum
(museum of antropology).
