Eindhoven - History

The Duke of Brabant granted city rights as early as 1232. However war, plundering and fires left little of the original fortified town. Nor is there much left of the old Eindhoven from around 1900, as the centre suffered much damage during the Second World War. However, the authentic village of Eersel, Oirschot with its medieval streets and squares and the splendid Eijmerick castle in Heeze (from 1650) uphold the memory of the Brabant of the past.

University-History

The idea of organizing an international student event at the Eindhoven University of Technology was first conceived in 1988. While visiting international festivals in Europe, a group of students got very enthusiastic about this and they took the initiative to organize such a festival in Eindhoven.

Fifty students from all over Europe visited this European Week. The main goal of the event was, and still is, stimulating European integration and international friendship between students in Europe.

This goal is not only accomplished by serious activities, but also by informal ones, like cultural workshops and festivals.

This initiative was continued in 1991 when the first European Week Eindhoven was held. In such a week, over 400 students from all over Europe came to Eindhoven. During the three convention days, the participants discussed European issues during lectures, workshops and forum-discussions. Together with the informal activities the event became a great success. In 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1999 similar weeks took place.
