The City
of Delft
Delft is one of the smaller cities in
The
Netherlands. It is located in between The
Hague and Rotterdam.
In the city centre many middle-age canals can still be found, the oldest
one, named "Oude Delft" or "Old Dug-out", being the
origin of the name Delft. Along this canal the Museumhotel
is located.
When arriving at the station in Delft one should walk to the first
canal in front of the station. Now on your left hand you will see an old
tilted blackish tower with pinnacles and a clock. The hotel is right in
front of it. The tower is tilted like this since 1400 AD so no need to
worry: it will not fall over during your visit.

The new church (the one on the picture above is the old church) has
the second highest church-tower in The Netherlands and is the burial
place of many ancestors of the Dutch royal family. The municipal museum
Het Prinsenhof is the place were Prince William of Orange was murdered
in 1584. Many more musea, old buildings, et cetera are present in Delft. Apart from being a historic city, Delft is also the
location of the largest Dutch technical university. With 14.000 students
in a city of about 95.000 inhabitants, it
is clear that this has
some influence on daily life.
As budgets are tight
nowadays we also made some reservations at Raedthuyshotel on the central market near the new
church. Here you will find simple rooms near nice terraces to drink
beer on a warm evening, which can be a little noisy.
Surroundings of Delft
As stated Delft is in between The Hague and Rotterdam. Both these
cities can be reached by train within 15 minutes. Taking a bus is
possible as well, but not very pleasant. A very good idea (also during
the evening) is taking the tram, line 1 (only line through Delft, near
the hotel), to The Hague. If you simply stay in the tram until the end
of the line you arrive at the Northsea beach in Scheveningen (about 45
minutes; departure back to Delft until midnight). Here you can walk on
the boulevard (don't expect palm trees), eat in a nice restaurant or
simply enjoy the sunset.
