Byzantine Church of Episkope

On the road to Kamari village and next to the ruined village of Mesa Gonia, is the Byzantine church of the Episcopate of Thira, founded at the end of the 11th century by the Emperor Alexios I Comnenos. It is an inscribed-cross, four-columned church with dome. Preserved in the interior are wall paintings of excellent quality and a wooden, carved templon (iconostasis) and it is decorated in the technique of mastic wax. Today the church gathers large crowds on August Fifteenth, the day of its festival. Location: Mesa Gonia, Thira

Agios Nicolaos Marmaritis Church

Grave monument in the shape of a small, square temple, built entirely of grey marble that is preserved intact. The structure is dated to the 3rd century B.C. According to the inscription carved below the niche, the temple was dedicated to the goddess Basileia and was used as a family tomb. The monument has now been converted into a Christian church, dedicated to St. Nicholas and has been called "Marmaritis" (of the marble) after the building material of the tomb.
Location: Megalochori, Thira

Opening Hours: after arrangement with the priest

Prophet Elias Monastery and Museum

Monastery of Prophet Elias is located on the peak of the mountain at the altitude of 550 meters and it is 3km from Pyrgos village. It is built in 1771 by two monks and in 19th century was expanded according to the order of King Othon. Inside the monastery, there is a museum containing ecclesiastic items worth seeing for their craftsmanship and unique designs. The museum also contains Byzantine documents, sacred vestments for archbishops and bishops, relics of saints kept in silver boxes as well as monastic crafts. Away from ecclesiastic subjects, the museum also hosts displays on shoemaking, printing, candle making, wine making and of typical local food.  The view from the monastery is panoramic over all the island of Santorini and the Aegean Sea.
