Naoussa - Culture

Naoussa-Macedonia-Greece, situated 19 kilometres from Veria in a green, well-watered region, it is very picturesque with traditional houses and the Arapitsa river running through it. Near Naoussa is the village of Lefkadia, where Macedonian tombs and the remains of Hellenistic buildings have been found. Naoussa itself is famous for its waterfalls and local architecture. Amindeo produces light reds, fruity roses, and sparkling white wines. At Agios Panteleimon the visitor can savour the interesting local cuisine: Sweet red peppers, pies, homemade noodles and game. Nimfeo, nearby, is a charming village with stone houses and an excellent small hotel, near the woods and not far from two ski centers.

Naoussa, its a beautiful city with the rich history, the plentiful waters and the verdourus sprouting rises above its vineyards. The Agios Nikolaos grove is also near, a magnificent spot with towering planes and spouting waters, a place for walking, relaxing and dining at the nearby restaurants. The wine of Naoussa, complex in aroma and flavour, finds a perfect companion to spicy red meats from the woods of Vermio, to traditional pies, meat balls (boubaria) and cheeses (especially salty badjo). Before the visitor leaves this region behind him he meets the Tombs of the Macedonian Kings at Lefkadia. For winter sports lovers, there are two first class ski centers in the region: The Tria - Pente Pigadia and Seli.

In Naoussa the visitor enters the most famous wine producing region of Macedonia. The history of wine in this region could start with Semeli, the mother of Dionysus, which according to the myth lived there, at the slopes of mount Vermion. It is here also, that the magnificent dancer Silinos, the faithful companion of the god of vineyard and wine, was born. The Naoussa vineyard, sun drenched and protected from the northern winds, is located on these slopes. Thus, the finest red grape variety of the northern region of Greece, Xinomavro, is cultivated and the deep coloured, rich bodied, capable of being aged NAOUSSA wine is produced (Appellation of Origin). The production of the red Vin de Pays d’ Imathia, from Xinomavro together with many other red grape varieties cultivated in the region, was recently legislated.

Wines - In the - Naoussa northern Greece the indigenous red variety "xinomavro" dominates. It is the central variety of four denominations of origin: "Naoussa", "Goumenissa", "Amynteon" and "Rapsani". The harvest usually starts towards the end of September. It is a noble Greek variety capable of producing full-bodied wines, with high acidity and relatively low tannins. Its characteristic aroma of red fruits, especially cherry and gooseberry, turns into aromas of dried fruits and spices while aging. However, in Amynteon, the cool climate and the higher altitude make it extremely hard for xinomavro to mature fully, but very interesting normal and sparkling rose wines can be found.
