It covers an area of 2111 km2 and in the south is bordered by
the sea. The land is in great part mountainous, with its highest peak
Mount Pangheon (1956 m), where there is a centre for winter sports. It has
two fertile valleys, that of Philipi and of Hrisoupoli and a river, the
Nestos, that constitutes its eastern border Its principal agricultural products are cereals, vegetables,
grapes and tobacco. Also important are meat and fish products. Its
industries process fertilizers, petroleum and various kinds of marble,
among them the famous white marble of Kavala. The Prefecture of Kavala is a well-known tourist site. With
its beautiful coast and its usually calm sea, the pleasant city of Kavala
offers enjoyable vacations. Philipi, one of the most interesting archaeological
sites of Greece, Eicosifinizza, the most ancient monastery of the Balkan
Peninsula and other places of the region with important remains make this
prefecture a very interesting site for visitors. Also, the nearby island
of Thassos is a wonderful place for excursions. Kavala, one of the most important cities of Greece, is
situated in Northern Greece, 164 km east of Thessaloniki. It is a
beautiful town that, thanks to its pleasant climate, its fine beaches and
its modern hotels, attracts a large current of tourists and is an ideal
place for vacations. Built in amphitheatrically shape on hills, the city of Kavala
extends its modern buildings to the sea. Kavala has beautiful large and
sandy beaches. It is one of the rare cities that have beach inside, with
clean and usually calm sea. Its port receives commercial and tourist
ships, as well as a fleet of picturesque fishing boats. The products of this area are tobacco, marble, fishing and
agricultural products. Very important is for the area the tourist
industry, with very satisfying accommodations. There are many attractive places in the region. Philipi is
one of these. The important archaeological site of Philipi is one of the
most well known historical places of Greece and receives many visitors
throughout all the year. The nearby green island of Thassos, in the gulf
of Kavala, is a beautiful place for one day trip or for a longer pleasant
sojourn. Today Kavala is a city with modern architecture. The
architectural remains of the 19th Century are some tobacco warehouses and
few nice mansions that in the past were characteristic constructions of
the city. The only part of the city where nothing has changed is the
old district of Panaghia. Here the castle and the old houses reflect the
various periods of Kavala’s history. By

The airport (27 km from Kavala) is connected with Athens by regularly
scheduled flights and with a number of Western European cities by

Bus
: Kavala can be reached by bus from Athens, Thessaloniki, Drama, Serres,
Xanthi, Komotini and Alexandroupolis. Komotini and Alexandroupolis are
