Dortmund - Culture

Stadtgarten-Central Park

In the centre of North Rhine-Westphalia Land (state), the most important region in Europe and the federal state with the strongest economy, Dortmund is one of the ten largest and most prominent cities in Germany. The strength of our city is expressed most clearly in its variety. A rich vein of cultural and sporting offers, model parks, and an attractive city-centre influences quality of life. An excellent transport network and infrastructure, a skilled, hard-working workforce, choice investment opportunities, and exceptional practice-oriented research institutions all go to make Dortmund a primary business location.

Being the sole freie Reichsstadt (Free Imperial City) in Westphalia, Dortmund possessed the self- assurance and internal unity required to resist all attempts to incorporate the city in foreign territorial states right up until the end of the German Empire. The lifestyle of the people of Dortmund is strongly influenced, even today, by the Westphalian cultural area. Owing to its size, its economic strength, and is catchments area, Dortmund is to all intents and purposes the heart of the Land region of Westphalia.

At the same time Dortmund is a major constituent part of the Ruhr district and thus part of a technological, research, and cultural landscape the like of which is to be found nowhere else in the world. Close economic and institutional links exist between Dortmund and the other centres of the Ruhr district, and Dortmund is a symbol of the technological and social expertise of the Ruhr district.

The ever-increasing orientation towards Europe is a reflection of Dortmund's roots as a member of the Hanseatic League and internationally minded industrial city. The globalisation of the markets represents a major challenge for Dortmund's economy. Here the city's excellent geographical location and transport links, its internationally renowned products and services, and not least its people's cosmopolitan and hospitable nature, give Dortmund the special strengths it will need to hold its own in the battle for business being fought by the cities and regions of Europe.

Located in one of the most culturally active landscapes anywhere in Europe, Dortmund is a city full of artistic energy and variety. The many modern museums and art galleries, the theatre and the opera house are all impressive evidence of this, as is the broad music scene that embraces everything from jazz club performances to huge concerts in the Westphalia Halls.

Independent drama groups, artists, musicians and authors also provide those all important impulses for cultural life in the city. Precedent setting cooperation between the "indie scene" and the city's arts, culture and entertainment agencies have now become a Dortmund trademark. In charge of planning the cultural programmes and festivals and of supporting the work of the independents is the City of Dortmund Culture Bureau (Kulturbüro). There are eleven arts and culture centres in the city, the majority of them independent, whose artistic activities the Kulturbüro is pleased to promote from rock and jazz to drama and fine art.

With a large number of publicly and privately owned museums, Dortmund ensures that the spectrum of cultural activities on offer is truly wide and varied. One of the most popular is the Museum am Ostwall which first opened its doors in 1947. Its comprehensive collection of 20th century art and the frequent special exhibitions have made it a byword for quality throughout Germany. The economic development in the region over the 19th century is well documented across a unique variety of industrial museums: the Westphalia Industrial Museum, for instance, in the former Zollern II/IV colliery, the Harbour Museum and the Hoesch Museum. The German Health & Safety at Work Exhibition has the second largest collection of technical artefacts in Germany.

The City and State Library in Dortmund have a total stock of 1.2 million items, most of which comprise archived academic literature. The emphasis tends to lie on the humanities, economics and medicine but, by virtue of its collaboration with the local technology oriented university library, access to the literature of virtually any discipline is possible to the reader. Furthermore, since the latest communications technology has been installed, the City and State Library can obtain all kinds of information and offer services to the more commercially interested user.

The Institute for Newspaper and Periodical Research has a uniquely extensive selection of newspapers and journals dealing with the subjects of mass communication, media and journalism.

The new library building - which will be exceptional from both the urban developmental and cultural angles - is scheduled to open in the summer of 1999.

Dortmund bids its visitors a very cordial welcome. There are many attractions and lots of things to do.

The cultural range is exceptional: the theatres, museums, art galleries and cabaret shows are all well worth a visit.

High above the Ruhr Valley, next to the Hohensyburg, the internationally renowned casino awaits its guests from home and abroad. Not that sport comes second best. One top sporting event follows another at the famous Westphalia Halls complex and nearby amenities.

And did you know that half of Dortmund's municipal territory is green? Westphalia Park, Dortmund Zoo and many other gardens, parks and municipal woodland guarantee both fun and recreation.
