The soils are mostly black clay and alluvial-meadow. The soils of the mountainsides are light-brown forest and the ones of the mountain ridges are mountain-meadow.
The hollow is famous for its rich beds of coals. Limestone rocks are also of importance to the industry. The town of Pernik is on one of the oldest trade routes on the Balkans, i.e. Sofia - Salonika - Scopje, which is the shortest route connecting the Dunabe and the Aegean Sea. The town of Pernik is 30 km away from the capital Sofia.
The festival is organized on a broad public base under the auspices of the Cultural ministry. It is the most significant mass cultural event in the region. More than 3000 performers from all over Bulgaria, as well as formations from many European countries take part in the festival. It is an an illustration of the most vital and deep-rooted traditions in bachelor fancy-dress rites, which were started in the remote past and have been preserved by the present day. The event is an original performance of winter and early spring fancy-dress rites, which are still popular. |
