Gabrovo - Culture

Gabrovo is an attractive tourist centre for its clear mountain air, historical and ethnographical preserves , and cultural monuments. The region of Gabrovo and its pertaining territory is considered to be one of the most ecologically sustainable areas of Bulgaria. This is confirmed by the rich flora and fauna. Some of the best hunting trophies in Europe as bear, red deer and mouflon can be found in the hunting preserves. There are several places of interest for the visitors of Gabrovo, which are of national and international importance.

Such place is the House of Humour and Satire. There you can see various art and ethnographic exhibitions and collections of African ritual and carnival masks and accessories. Thousands of world famous humorists from more than 150 countries visit The House of Humour and Satire during the biennial Festival of Humour and Satire.

The most picturesque place in Gabrovo is the architectural and ethnographical complex Etar - a unique open-air museum. The Bulgarian Renaissance atmosphere is recreated there by the old-time workshops of traditional Bulgarian art and crafts. All the activities here are done by hand and with the help only of water-driven machines. There are some hotels, restaurants, and taverns available. Near Gabrovo is the 600-years-old village Bozhentsi - an architectural and historical preserve. Bozhentsi is located in a pretty valley, and all its authentic houses are from the period of Bulgarian Renaissance. Bozhentsi is an excellent place for individual and family tourism. Uzana is a mountain locality near Gabrovo. Here is the geographical centre of Bulgaria. Uzana is a suitable place for your winter and summer holiday. Here you can do some skiing, horse-riding, mountain-climbing, etc. From Lyulyatsite Resort (The Lilac Shrubs) to Gabrovo it is 15 km. The resort is famous for its favourable effect on some cases of allergy, hypertonia and chronic diseases of respiratory system. A lot of theatrical, musical and folklore professional groups, a puppet-show, pantomime theatre, Gabrovo Chamber Orchestra, "Gabrovo" - Swing Dixy Band and a lot of others contribute to the cultural life of Gabrovo. The visitors can see the unique expositions of the History Museum, Art Gallery and National Museum of Education. The National Museum of Education is located in the building of Aprilovska Gimnazia - the first non-clerical secondary school in Bulgaria.

Today the town of Gabrovo is an important industrial centre. There are quite a few modern companies in the field of mechanical engineering , electronic engineering and tool manufacturing. Light and food processing industries have considerable share in the overall profile of Gabrovo as important industrial centre. Several large textile mills along with the leading companies in shoe and plastics manufacturing add good credit to this profile.
