Botevgrad - History

In the Middle Ages the life was located in the village of Zelin, 3 km southwards of the ancient road. At the end of the 14th century the settlement was a part of a fief centered around Bozhenishki Urvich fortress.

During the second half of the 18th century the village started declining and its inhabitants made for the lowland where another settlement - Samoundjievo sprang up.

On 23rd of March, 1866 the village was renamed Orhanieh and proclaimed a town and administrative centre of the district.

After the Bulgarian National Revolutionary Struggles and the supervened Liberation from the Ottomans the town experienced a rapid economic development followed by all-out educational and cultural activities in the whole district. On 1st of October, 1934 the town was renamed Botevgrad - after Hristo Botev - the great Bulgarian poet and revolutionary. His cheta - a band of guerrilla fighters  - got to this town after being harried by the Ottomans near the town of Vratsa. After the death of the leader 12 of Botev’s men were buried in the church yard of the village of Skravena.

After the mid 1940’s the economy of Botevgrad changed greatly. Buses, microelectronics and chemical products have been produced here for several decades. The great crisis in 1989 led to substantial reconstructions in economy.
