Botevgrad - Culture

The region of Botevgrad municipality is quite rich in natural resources. The relief is remarkable for its outstanding variety. The municipality covers the following geographic parts: a part of Botevgradska Kotlovina (the valley of Botevgrad), some parts of Botevgradski Predbalkan mountain and four of the Balkan shoulders - Razhana, Golyama Planina, Mourgash and Billo. Kotlovinata Zhleba - Fillet Hollow is situated between the main Balkan Range and the Northern Balkan. It was formed between the end of the Pliocene and the beginning of Quaternary periods. This hollow has sunken as a result of Tectonic movements.

This is the largest city in the south-western Bulgaria.

The town is situated in the valley of the river Bistritsa. This is an industrial and cultural centre, with the enormous tobacco plant Bulgartabak and the American university.

Spring is cool and rainy, sometimes it hails. There are conditions for formation of late ground frost.

The first half of autumn is warm, sunny and dry. During the second half it gets cool, the cloudiness increases, it rains more and more often, it turns foggy, the winds rise. Sometimes there is ground frost in the beginning of the autumn.

The rivers on the territory of Botevgrad municipality are left tributaries of the Malak Iskar river. The Bebresh river is the main draining artery. It runs down the large valley cut between Mourgash and Bilo.

The mountains are rich in springs and wells. There are three lakes on the territory of Botevgrad municipality each of them having specific functions and characteristics.

Botevgrad municipality lives not only with the present and future but with the knowledge, experience and history of the past generations as well. The wealth of historical monuments and finds as pottery, statuary and other objects testimony to culture and artistic skills of the people who inhabited the region 2000 years ago.
