Going
out on the town for some culture in Minsk might be one of the most
satisfying experiences of your trip to Belarus. The quality of live
performance is extremely high and prices for tickets are extremely low.
The performers are obviously not compensated as well as they should be.
To find out what's on in town, just check any of the poster stands in the
metro stations or on the main streets Visit a crumbling cinema if only to
fantasize that you’re really watching a moody exercise in propaganda
during the dark Soviet years. But don’t expect anything to tease the
intellect these days. It’s generally a choice between stale romantic
comedies, martial arts flicks and awful Hollywood movies. Don’t go
expecting anything sophisticated like subtitles. Simply try to absorb the
monotonous tones of the one-person overdub. And don’t be so foolish as
to assume you’ll be able to decipher the original language underneath
the dubbing either. Nevertheless, Minsk has about 20 cinemas with tickets
costing no more than US$1. Here are a few of our favourites:
Local
beer and vodka are cheap, accessible 24 hours a day, and are more than
palatable. Beer is generally light in complexion. Since mid-1996,
Belarus’ leading brewery Lida has been supplying Minsk with beer - much
to the delight of local beer lovers. Dark beer addicts should try Black
Prince; light beer fans, Lida Classic. The best Belarusian vodkas are
Zolotoe Koltso, Kryshtall and the silky Belaya Rus. Don’t confuse with
Belavezhskaya, a brown herbal drink said to contain medicinal qualities.
Most food shops sell alcohol as well as the kiosks dotted all over the
centre of town; easily identifiable by drinkers huddled together in the
street, swilling the local brew. Beer is served on tap and is said to be
three times cheaper than bottled beer. Pay little for a half-litre of
locally brewed Drazhnya, Lekkert or Burshtyn and risk the consequences.
Russian-speakers
should try out one of Minsk’s Babushka crossings - the city’s answer
to a drive-in off-license. Dogged by the militia for ignoring excise
taxation and licensing, these chummy old women still sell local vodka,
beer and cigarettes for rock-bottom prices at certain spots on the street,
especially in the suburbs, until 02:00 or later. Crossings include the
corners of Very Khoruzhey and Kuybysheva and Kuybysheva and Kulman near
Komarovsky market.
